Druid's Challenge (6-8th November): a three-day, 84-mile, 135km, ultra marathon crossing the historic Ridgeway

The route takes in the oldest roadway in the UK: the Ridgeway. Starting in Buckinghamshire, competitors will make their way to Wiltshire over the course of three days, with two overnights in Watlington and Didcot. The Ridgeway path takes in stunning views of quintessential southern English countryside including Ivinghoe Beacon.


You'll be following in the footsteps of travellers, herdsmen and soldiers who have used the Ridgeway since prehistoric times. Be entranced by the ancient landscapes, hidden valleys, beautiful downland and woodland.

As with all of our events, everything is taken care of at the Druid's Challenge so you can focus on the experience! Overnight accommodation, evening meals, showers, breakfast, food and drink at checkpoints, free parking, and even inspiring guest speakers in the evening are all included.

You can enter the whole weekend event including food and accommodation or individual days.

Entries will close one week before the event (or when full). A waitlist option will be available if the event becomes fully booked.

Early bird - £160 before 30th April 2020
Standard entry - £180, from 1st May 2020
Late entry - £195, from 1st October 2020

Please note: a 2.5% service charge, levied by the registration software, will be added to your total. If you need to cancel your entry or transfer to another event, you can do that by logging back into the booking system, Racespace.

Our refunds policy: no refunds or deferrals will be made within one month of the event start.

Start / Finish

Registration will be open from 08:00 on Friday at Tring Cricket Club, London Rd, Tring, Hertfordshire, HP23 6HA.

Start on day 1: Ivinghoe Beacon, LU7 9EB
Finish on day 1: Icknield College, Watlington, OX49 5RB
Finish on day 2: on the Ridgeway (grid reference: SU458850) with a shuttle bus to Saint Birinus School, Mereland Road, Didcot OX11 8AZ
Finish on day 3: Alexandra Hotel, Wroughton, SN4 0QJ.


A broad track that takes the higher ground, the Ridgeway is a unique route that passes through the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), often quite a distance from any towns or villages, giving a real sense of peace and seclusion. You'll experience open views of the rolling chalk downland, peppered with ancient monuments including Stone Age long barrows, Bronze Age round barrows, Iron Age forts and white horse chalk figures. It's a National Trail with plenty of clear signposts and post discs. Overnight accommodation and guest speakers

You'll stay at Icknield Community College in Watlington on the first night and St Birinus School, Mereland Road, Didcot, OX11 8AZ on the second night, with sleeping accommodation in a large hall.

Mid-event hotels

Don't fancy sharing accommodation during the event? We'll be running minibus shuttles to and from three local hotels during the event, as follows:

Thursday night - Alexander Hotel, Swindon (for those taking the coach to the start on Friday morning), or the Premier Inn, Tring close to the start

Friday night - The Mercure Hotel, Watlington

Saturday night - Premier Inn Milton Interchange, Abingdon

Please note: these are the only hotels our minibus will run to. If you're planning to stay somewhere else, please make sure you've booked taxis to and from the event.

After the event

We have arranged discounted rooms for anyone who wants to rest up and stay overnight near the finish at the Principle-Hayley Hotel. Single occupancy B&B is £55; doubles or twins B&B are £65. Quote 'Extreme' when booking to take advantage of the discounted rates.

Aid stations

There will be three checkpoints each day at regular intervals, fully stocked with water, and sweet and savoury food to keep you fuelled.

Due to the risk of cross contamination, we cannot provide checkpoint food to suit all dietary requirements. If you require special food or snacks to suit any allergies or vegetarian/vegan diets, can you please bring your own. Put them in containers, marked with your name and checkpoint number and give them to the checkpoint teams at the start of the race.

We're going green

Help us do our bit to reduce the impact our events have on the environment by bringing your own reusable or collapsible cups for drinks at checkpoints and on the overnights. Some suggestions we love: the Salomon soft cup and the X cup.


The event is supported by a Course Manager and a fully qualified medical crew will be in attendance. We strongly recommend taking a moment to read our medical page before booking.


The only compulsory kit is a fully charged mobile phone and a minimum 500ml of water, but it's worth taking a look at our recommended kit list.

Other equipment may be made compulsory by the race director depending on the weather.

Getting to and from the event

There are plenty of options for reaching the start and finish points of the Druid's Challenge:

By train

To the start

Trains run regularly from London Euston to Tring, taking roughly 35 minutes. Note that the first train leaves Euston at 05:34 on Friday.

We'll be running a minibus shuttle from Tring Station before the start times, transporting you to the registration point. We can also pick up those arriving in the evening at Princes Risborough Station from 18.00. Just let us know whether you plan to use our shuttle and your train times when you book.

From the finish

On Sunday, you'll be able to catch a train from Swindon to London Paddington or onwards towards the South West. We'll be running a minibus shuttle from the finish to Swindon Station regularly - it's a 20 minute journey.

Park at the finish - coach to the start

We have arranged for competitors to be able to leave cars at the Sunday finish (Alexandra Hotel, Wroughton, SN4 0QJ) on Friday morning and book a place on a coach to the start. This means that your car will be at the finish ready for when you get there on Sunday.

We have also arranged for a discount at a local hotel (De Vere Alexandra House) for the night before the event (Thursday), so you can head over ahead of picking up the coach on Friday morning - tell them XNRG sent you when booking. There are other large hotels near the M4 Swindon Junction as well.

The coach will leave at 07.00 on Friday morning to reach the start. Depending on traffic, walkers might need to join the main group of runners when they start at 11.00.

Other transport options

After the event, our minibuses and some cars will need to return to the Tring area on Sunday evening. We may be able to transport some people back to the start with us. If you'd like a lift, let us know and be prepared to wait while we finish packing up. We'd recommend making your own arrangements, but we'll do what we can to accommodate your requirements.
