I mentioned last week that I would share with you “learnings” I picked up whilst taking part in the 300 mile (500km) foot race across the arctic waste of the Yukon.

How to get through the hard times

I started the event with a strategy that I was going to rest for 10 minutes every 2 hours 30 mins. The plan was to stop, sit on my pulk, have a hot drink from my flask, something to eat, then carry on for the next 2 hours 30 mins. This is a strategy, or something similar to one I have used before and helps break the long legs down into smaller more manageable chunks. I also had a strategy that at the end of each leg – which varied from 50 kms to 75kms, I would have either a 3 hour or 6 hour sleep – alternatively and depending on whether the checkpoint was inside or outside.

As the race went on the 2 hours 30 minutes was to long, so I shortened it to 2 hours. This really helped when I was going through the night, or when I had a long leg ahead. I broke it down into 6 or 7 stops. Some nights I had to go right through and got incredibly tired. I was falling asleep on my feet as I was walking. So I set myself 15 minute goals, and every 15 minutes I would stop and sleep leaning on my walking poles for 1 minute, then move on for the next 15 minutes, until I got to the 2 hours and had a 10 minute break.

This routine, and structured helped me take such a massive task and break it into manageable chunks, it also enabled me to focus on the next small goal rather than being overwhelmed by the large goal.

Have you ever felt stressed or felt like a task was to big, or impossible ?? Of course you have, we all have. If you take what I have learnt from the Yukon, take that task and break it down into smaller manageable chunks that you feel are achievable and you can get energised about.

How to get through the hard times

How can routine help you in everyday life. I had read many articles and books about successful people over the years. One thing they have in common is they have a rigid routine they follow everyday and every week. They schedule time for the important things – like fitness, family, discussions with the teams and clients – they schedule time for administrative tasks, so that they can batch them all into one slot a week instead of many interruptions or many diary slots. They then stick to the routine everyday / every week and this helps them manage the stress, the workload and ensure that they have time for the important stuff.

What is your routine ?? what could or should it be in your personal or business life ?? How could having a set routine, and set time slots help you manage your week more effectively and efficiently ??

I guess it comes down to structure. If you have a structure to your routine, to your time, to your projects then you have something solid to hold onto when the going gets tough.
