Cotswold Way Challenge – Best Views Ever

Saturday 6th April saw the start of the 2013 Hi-tec Ultra trail series with the first Cotswold Way Challenge.  82 runners entered the event which was promised to be hilly, sunny and with beautiful views and it delivered on all three.  57 miles over two days with 2750 metres of ascent along the Cotswold Way taking in some quintessentially English villages and Neolithic grounds it was an event that the Extreme Energy team were looking forward to hosting.

James Poole laid down a marker to the other competitors by clocking in with an impressive run of 4 hr 12 on day 1. Day two was more of a social affair for James who ran alongside fellow runner and closet competitor Ben Winrow (2nd place) to take the victory over the two days. Dan de Belder completed the podium positions in the mens race.  Emily Millington sited the event as her ‘A race’ for the season and she certainly brought her ‘A game’ finishing the first day 26 minutes faster than the next female. She built on this performance by posting an impressive 2nd day run to finish 3rd overall and even had enough time for an ice cream en route! A great performance by Emily and her two fellow Shropshire ladies; Kate Whitfield and Debbie Pitt who claimed positions 3 and 4 respectively.  Kerry Reed was delighted to spoil the Shropshire party and claim 2nd place. There were, however, fantastic performances throughout the field in what really was a tough event. Volunteers commented on the friendliness of the competitors who managed to smile despite being really tested. Completing the course was a tremendous achievement and all competitors should be justly proud.

The event was well received and once again the infamous Extreme Energy atmosphere was well and truly apparent, no doubt aided by some out of character English weather.  We all look forward to the next event…
