The Pilgrim Challenge North Downs Way Multistage Ultra
February 6th & 7th 2010

Extreme Energy are delighted to introduce the “Pilgrim Challenge”  a multistage race along the North Downs track way, the oldest trade route in England and route used by Pilgrims for Winchester, Canterbury, Dover & the Continent. The route follows the North Downs Way from Farnham in Surrey through to Merstham in
Surrey.

The event will suit those who want a new challenge, people looking for an alternative to running marathons, those training for event Marathon Des Sables or anyone who loves seeing the beautiful English countryside.

Format:
 

2 Days event covering 33 miles each day


Cost:
 

£86 for both days (inclusive of accommodation & food) or £33 for individual days.


Start: 

1.    Day 1- Farnham ( Sandy Farm Business Centre)

2.    Day 2 – Merstham (St Nicholas School) 


Finish:
 

Farnham (Sandy Farm Business Centre)


Accommodation:
 

St
Nicholas School, Merstham, Redhill, Surrey, RH13 PU
Sleeping will be in a Large Hall & Gym Area


Facilities:
 

Showers, sleeping area, rest area and restaurant area


Food: 


All food will be provided for Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
There will also be water and some food available at each checkpoint (please do not rely on checkpoint food as your only fuel, this should be viewed as additional to the fuel you carry yourself.)


Kit:
 

We will transport all non running kit each day. 1 bag per competitor. For those training for the Marathon Des Sables or similar you may want to carry all your kit which is fine by us.

You will need to bring running gear for the 2 days, minimum compulsory list is below

You will also need to bring overnight gear for the night including sleeping bag, sleeping mat, wash gear, cloths for the evenings and anything else to make you comfortable. 


Compulsory Kit:

*       Running shoes or walking boots

*       Running gear

*       Long trousers/leggings

*       Thermal top

*       Buff Warm hat

*       Waterproof

*       Whistle

*       Emergency silver blanket

*       Mobile phone fully charged

*       Head torch and spare batteries (absolutely essential)

*       Optional – North Downs Way Maps – Ordnance Survey Guildford & Farnham 145 1:25 Scale & OS Dorking, BoxHill & Reigate 146 1:25 Scale

We will be carrying out random kit checks and there will be penalty time added to competitors with any kit missing, or you may not be allowed to run.


Route / Navigation: 


The route follows part of the
North Downs way. It is marked the whole way by signs with various signs such as a white acorn or yellow arrow marked North Downs way. So as long as you follow the signs the navigation is open and straightforward. However you may want to bring a map with you.

Supporters / Volunteers: 


If there are any supporters of competitors that want to support throughout the event then we would
 love to have you along.

If you are able to help man checkpoints / water stations etc then we would be prepared to provide you with food & accommodation for the Saturday evening / Sunday morning.


Start / Finish Transportation:
 

There will be numerous options for transportation to and from the start.

The ideal option is that you manage your own transportation via public transport or car.

There is ample car parking at the start and at the halfway stage, please note whilst cars can be left in a private business park or school they are left at the owners risk.

Extreme Energy will be providing a minibus to transport people from Farnham Station to the start from 0700 on Day1. At the end of day 1 we will transport any people heading home to Merstham Station. At the end of Day 2 we will transport people to Farnham station.


Route Details: 


The route follows the
North Downs from Farnham to Merstham. There will be 4 checkpoints each day. The checkpoint details will be available shortly

Medical:


There will be a first aider on hand through out the event. We will also transport any major injuries to local hospitals as required.


Massage:

We will have one or two people available for 15 minute sports massages at an additional cost. Bookable on arrival each evening.

 
Outline Daily Schedule:      

Saturday

-          0700 – Minibus pick up from Farnham Station begins

-          0800 – walkers start

-          0900 – 1st runners start

-          0915 – Last minibus pick up from Farnham

-          1000 – Sub 6 hour runners start time

-          1900 – most competitors finish

-          1800 – evening meal available from this time until last people have been through

-          Transport to Merstham station available.

 

Sunday

-          0600 – breakfast available / morning briefings

-          0700 – walkers start

-          0800 – 1st runners start

-          0900 – 2nd runners start

-          1800 – most competitors finish

-          1500 – 1900 – Minibus available to Farnham Station

Check point locations, open / close times will be detailed nearer the time.

Cancellations:
 
In the unfortunate event that a competitor has to cancel we will apply the following cancellation policy. If the cancellation is within a month of the start date we will refund in full. After this point there is no guaranteed refund. We will look at offering a discounted place on a future event to help compensate for some of the cost
