Round The Island Ultra Challenge 2014

On one of the hottest weekends of the year 2 races set off early on the morning of the 21st June from Cowes on the Isle of Wight. One was the yacht race with 1500 professional and amateur crews going anticlockwise round the island the other was the Extreme Energy Round The Island Ultra.

The light winds meant that the boats made very slow or even no progress. For the runners the intense heat, and 38 miles of undulating coastline meant that the walkers and runners had a very tough first day. Whilst the runners were able to continue to move forward with one step at a time, the yachts were struggling to make any progress with the lack of wind. They were welcomed at the finish with a water spray attached to the finish gantry to allow them to cool down.

The overnight in Brightstone on the cliffs overlooking the channel was stunning. The sea was perfect, the air warm and it didn’t get dark till gone 2300. We were fortunate to be joined by Edward Chapman, not as crew this weekend, but as a competitor and speaker. On Satturday night he shared with us his experience at the multiday ultra in Bhutan.

The next day was a mere 32 miles in hot conditions, but the early start meant some quicker times, albeit on tired legs.

There were outstanding performances throughout the field, and heroic ones from everyone that took on such a big challenge.

The fastest runner was Nathan Montague who finished the 2 days and 70 miles in an amazing 9 hours 24 mins, which was faster than the quickest yacht in the sailing race.

The fastest lady runner was Katarina Voigt who finished in 13 hours 07 minutes and 6th place overall.

We would like to say a huge congratulations to everyone who took on the challenge, and a special congratulations to those that completed the 2 gruelling days.
